Postpartum

Postpartum is the emptiness and nakedness that one experiences after giving birth. It is the perfect time to embrace impermanence, vulnerability, the simple things, living at a slow pace…

It is a fact that the absence of a village has distorted for a long time now the sense of identity of many mothers. Mothers (and children) present dysfunctions and disharmonies - depression, emotional distress - which are a wake-up call and a mirror of a dysfunctional society.

We live in communities where ritual practices have been forgotten, re-built on a nuclear family model based on an individualized ideology. And being a mother is not just another role to be played. It is a new social condition. Hence the importance of recognising Maternity as a rite of passage. And if this rite is not completed, a widespread feeling of disempowerment is installed.

That is why support and physical presence are fundamental for the mother and her family. And by being there, the doula provides a context and an environment to breathe, stop and feel beauty. She respects and validates the needs of mothers, promotes a welcoming and safe space where the couple can express themselves honestly, contributes to smoothing any loneliness the mother may experience, provides access to information from reliable sources and supports the puerperium stage in all its intensity, yet gently, allowing the new mother to nourish herself and to emerge fulfilled from her experience. These practices are based on the physiological design, on the biological map of the human being (therefore universal practises), with a (re)structuring purpose.
